Orlando was offically considered a city in 1885, but for more than 50 years prior to that date: war was waged by Native Americans on the original Fort Gatlin. Fort Gatlin made way for the current city lines to be drawn.

There are many theories on how Orlando got it's name but here are the most popular ones:
The Judge James Speer naming the city after a man named Orlando, who once worked for him
Another theory is that the same James Speer named the city after Shakespeare's play, "As You Like It"
The last theory is that a soldier by the name of Orlando Reeves was buried just south of Lake Eola.
